Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 884)

The Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 884) is a temporary visa that allows the aged parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to stay temporarily in Australia.

Process

To be eligible for the Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 884), you must:

  • Have an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • Be old enough to receive the Australian aged pension
  • Be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, when you apply for this visa and when the decision is made
  • Not have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa

If you are getting help with your visa application, make sure to read the information on who can help with your visa application before paying someone.

With this visa, you can:

  • Live in Australia for up to 2 years
  • Work and study in Australia (you will not receive government support)
  • Apply for a permanent Contributory Aged Parent (subclass 864) visa

The visa costs AUD33,895 and has a processing time that varies. For an indication of processing times, use the visa processing time guide tool. Please note that the processing times are a guide and not specific to your application.

You can include members of your family unit in your application, and they must meet the health and character requirements. There is an additional charge for each family member who applies with you.

To apply for the permanent Contributory Aged Parent (subclass 864) visa, you can apply as a two-step process by first applying for the Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) subclass 884 visa. Applying for the subclass 884 visa and then the subclass 864 visa allows you to spread the cost of the visas over a number of years.

This is a temporary visa, and you can stay in Australia for 2 years starting from the date the visa is granted. You cannot stay longer by extending or reapplying for this visa. If you want to stay longer, you can apply for a different visa.

The demand for these visas is greater than the number of places available each year, so processing times can be lengthy. If your application is incomplete or if we need more information from you, it may take longer to process.

We assess applications for this visa in 2 stages. First, we check eligibility and either add the application to the queue or refuse it. Then, we continue assessing the application when a place becomes available and make a decision.

If you have had a visa cancelled or a previous application refused, you may still apply for a permanent visa. However, it is important to note that we will consider your immigration history when making a decision on your application.

Before you apply, check your passport and gather all the necessary documents, including identity documents, sponsor documents, character documents, balance-of-family documents, and more. Make sure all non-English documents are translated into English and certified where required. Keep a copy of your completed application for your records.

You must apply for the visa on paper and be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, when the application is submitted and when the decision is made. If you have an existing parent visa application, you must withdraw that application when you apply for this visa.

After you apply, we will let you know when we have received your application and documents. You may need to provide additional information, undergo health exams or provide biometrics. Make sure to stay lawful by holding a valid visa while your application is being processed.

Once a decision is made on your application, we will notify you in writing. If the visa is granted, we will provide you with the visa grant number, start date, and conditions. You must obey all Australian laws while on this visa.

For Sponsors

To sponsor your parent for the Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 884), you must be a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. You must agree to support the applicant and their family for their first 2 years in Australia. The sponsorship lasts for 2 years.

There is no fee to sponsor an applicant, but you have financial responsibilities. You must provide support, accommodation, and financial assistance to the applicant and their family members who come with them. You can withdraw your sponsorship at any time before a decision is made on the visa application, but you cannot withdraw after the visa is granted.

Make sure to let us know if there are any changes to your circumstances, such as changes to your phone number, email, address, or passport. Your sponsorship obligations last for 2 years, and you must fulfill them during that time.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please refer to the official Australian immigration website or contact the Parent Visa Centre in Perth.
