Major Update: English Language Requirements Changing for Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482)

If you're planning to apply for the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa – Subclass 482, take note: English language requirements are changing from 13 September 2025, subject to the passage of legislation. What’s Changing?

Starting 13 September 2025:

• Three new English language tests will be accepted for the SID visa.

• Scoring requirements will be aligned across all test providers for consistency.

• Some existing test options and score thresholds will be updated.

• Cambridge C1 Advanced tests will no longer be accepted if taken on or after 13 September 2025.

These updates are part of a broader effort to ensure visa applicants demonstrate an appropriate level of English proficiency while offering more flexibility in how that requirement can be met.

Which Tests Will Be Accepted?

From 13 September 2025, English language test requirements will align with the Vocational level of English outlined in the Migration (Specification of Language Tests, Test Scores and Passports) Instrument 2025 (LIN25/016). You can review these specifics via the Federal Register of Legislation.

Applicants will also have the option to retake individual test skills (where offered), and if the Department accepts this format, the improved scores may count toward the application.

Important Deadlines

• Before 13 September 2025: You can still take the Cambridge C1 Advanced test and use it for your application (within the standard 3-year validity).

• After 13 September 2025: Cambridge C1 Advanced will no longer be accepted. Be sure to schedule your test before this date if you prefer this provider.

Regardless of the test you choose, it must meet SID visa requirements based on the date you take the test.

Labour Agreement Stream Considerations

For applicants under the Labour Agreement stream, your English skills must match the needs of your nominated occupation. In these cases, requirements may vary and will be specified in the agreement between your sponsoring employer and the Australian Government.
