Mobile Plant Operators (ANZSCO 721) are responsible for operating various types of mobile plant equipment to perform a wide range of tasks in Australia. These tasks include clearing and cultivating land, sowing and harvesting crops, felling trees, moving and excavating rock and soil, transporting pallets and containers, and laying roads and railway tracks.

Indicative Skill Level:

Most occupations within the Mobile Plant Operators category require a certain level of skill, which can be acquired through the following qualifications and experience:

In Australia:

  • AQF Certificate II or III (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)

In New Zealand:

  • NZQF Level 2 or 3 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)

It is important to note that relevant experience of at least one year may be considered as a substitute for the formal qualifications mentioned above. In some cases, additional on-the-job training and experience may be required in addition to the formal qualification.

Tasks Include:

  • Driving mobile plant equipment to the worksite
  • Operating and maneuvering plant equipment on site
  • Selecting and fitting attachments to the plant
  • Manipulating controls to operate attachments mechanically, hydraulically, and electrically, and to move materials
  • Monitoring the operation of the plant directly and by referring to instruments
  • Monitoring the condition of the plant, performing minor repairs, and reporting mechanical faults
