Counsellors play a crucial role in providing information and support to individuals facing vocational, relationship, social, and educational difficulties. They work closely with people to help them identify and define their emotional issues through various therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive behavior therapy, interpersonal therapy, and other talking therapies.

Indicative Skill Level:

Most occupations within the counsellor unit group require a bachelor's degree or higher qualification, demonstrating a high level of skill. In some cases, relevant experience and on-the-job training may also be necessary in addition to formal qualifications (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

Tasks Include:

  • Working with clients to explore career, study, and employment options by gathering and analyzing relevant information about their abilities and needs.
  • Providing clients with information and resources to enhance their job-seeking skills.
  • Evaluating client needs in relation to treatment for drug and alcohol abuse.
  • Conducting counselling sessions with individuals, couples, and family groups.
  • Assisting clients in understanding and adjusting their attitudes, expectations, and behaviors to develop healthier interpersonal and marital relationships.
  • Presenting alternative approaches and discussing the potential for attitude and behavior change.
  • Collaborating with clients to develop rehabilitation plans that consider vocational and social needs.
  • Offering information, understanding, and advice on the learning and behavior of students, particularly those with special needs, and assisting parents and teachers in addressing these needs.
  • May work in a call center.
