Health and Welfare Support Workers play a crucial role in assisting Health Professionals in delivering patient care within various healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, and community-based care facilities. They also provide valuable support, information, and advice to clients on a wide range of social welfare matters.

Most occupations within the Health and Welfare Support Workers category require a specific level of skill, which can be obtained through the following qualifications and experience:

In Australia:

  • AQF Bachelor degree or higher qualification. Alternatively, at least five years of relevant experience can substitute for a formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1); or
  • AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma, or Diploma, or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 2)

In New Zealand:

  • NZQF Bachelor degree or higher qualification. Alternatively, at least five years of relevant experience can substitute for a formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1); or
  • NZQF Diploma, or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 2)

In certain cases, additional on-the-job training and relevant experience may be required alongside formal qualifications.

Tasks Include:

  • Attending accidents and providing pre-hospital care and transport
  • Examining and treating dental ailments, as well as constructing and repairing dental devices
  • Planning and implementing leisure activity programs to promote social development and wellbeing for individuals in healthcare and community settings
  • Assessing, planning, and implementing nursing care according to accepted standards and practices
  • Providing advice, training, and support to parents of newborn infants
  • Acting as an advocate, interpreter, and educator to facilitate healthcare delivery to Indigenous communities
  • Utilizing various techniques, such as soft tissue massage, to assist healing, prevent injury, and promote relaxation
  • Offering guidance to clients on emotional, financial, recreational, health, housing, and other social welfare matters
