Toolmakers and Engineering Patternmakers are skilled professionals who specialize in making and repairing tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and other precision parts and equipment. They work with fine tolerances to ensure the proper functioning of machine tools and other production machinery. Additionally, they are responsible for constructing full-size engineering, visual, and experimental models, as well as models used for the manufacture of prototype developmental products.

Indicative Skill Level:

Most occupations within the Toolmakers and Engineering Patternmakers unit group require a certain level of skill, which can be acquired through the following qualifications and experience:

In Australia:

  • AQF Certificate III, including a minimum of two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

In New Zealand:

  • NZQF Level 4 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

In some cases, at least three years of relevant experience can substitute for the formal qualifications mentioned above. Additionally, certain instances may require relevant experience and/or on-the-job training in addition to the formal qualification.

Tasks Include:

  • Studying drawings and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of articles to be manufactured and models to be constructed
  • Measuring and marking out metal stock and castings using various gauges
  • Shaping metal and wood stock using machine tools
  • Checking the accuracy of manufactured articles and finished patterns to fine tolerances, using precision measuring instruments
  • Testing and modifying manufactured articles
  • Applying protective finishes to patterns and painting pattern sections to indicate the method of assembly
  • Assembling pattern sections and shaping work pieces to the specified finish
  • Pouring and spreading materials into molds and over models of patterns, and building laminations of fiberglass cloth and plastic resin to fabricate patterns
  • Repairing broken and damaged patterns and correcting patterns to compensate for defects in casting
  • Constructing templates for layout and inspection

323411 Engineering Patternmaker

An Engineering Patternmaker constructs full-size engineering models, typically made out of timber. These models are used in the manufacturing process to produce metal castings, copy models, vacuum form tooling, and tooling for the automotive, aircraft, or fiberglass industries.

A Toolmaker is responsible for making and repairing tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and other precision parts and equipment. They work with fine tolerances to ensure the proper functioning of machine tools and other production machinery. Additionally, Toolmakers may specialize in various areas, including Die Casting, Die Sinking, Jigmaking (Metal), Plastic Mould Making, and Press-tool Making.
