‘Speed is our friend’: Immunologist explains how ‘supercharged’ cells help fight against COVID-19

Associate Professor Stuart Turville from UNSW Sydney’s Kirby Institute leads a team that has developed genetically “supercharged” cells to quickly understand the dynamics of different variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

To respond to COVID-19 effectively, scientists need to be able to understand complex information about the virus as quickly as possible. A/Prof Turville calls these cells ‘canaries in the coal mine’ – because they allow his team to describe a variant or strain of the virus quicker than any other method.
